THE IMPACT OF SPORTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF NIGERIA: CASE STUDY OF ENUGU RANGERS
Abstract
This study examines The Impact of Sports on the Development of Nigeria: A Case Study of Enugu Rangers. It explores how sports function as a catalyst for national development by fostering unity, youth empowerment, economic growth, and international recognition. Using Enugu Rangers Football Club as a focal point, the research traces the historical evolution of sports in Nigeria, highlights its socio-political, educational, and economic contributions, and analyzes challenges limiting its full potential, such as underfunding, inadequate infrastructure, and neglect of grassroots development. Primary data were obtained through interviews with players, sports analysts, and fans, complemented by secondary sources from published works, archival records, and online materials. The findings reveal that Enugu Rangers not only promotes regional identity and community cohesion but also contributes to job creation, crime reduction among youth, and local economic stimulation on match days. The study concludes that sports remain a vital instrument for national integration and socioeconomic advancement. It recommends increased investment in sports infrastructure, stronger grassroots programs, and policy reforms to maximize sports’ role in Nigeria’s development.
